Knowing the warning signs of a heart attack can help you act fast. The most common sign is chest pain, pressure or tightness, which may feel like squeezing or fullness. Discomfort can also spread to the arm, shoulder, neck, jaw or back.
Other signs include shortness of breath, a cold sweat, nausea and lightheadedness. Some people, especially women, notice less typical symptoms such as unusual tiredness or shortness of breath without much chest pain.
If you think you or someone near you is having a heart attack, call 911 right away. Do not wait to see whether symptoms pass, and avoid driving yourself to the hospital. Emergency crews can begin care on the way. Talk to your doctor about your personal heart risk and how to lower it.
