Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) cause no symptoms, so the only way to know your status is to get tested. Testing is a routine part of caring for your health, not a sign that something is wrong.
The CDC recommends that everyone aged 13 to 64 be tested for HIV at least once. Other tests depend on your age, partners and risk, so anyone who is sexually active can ask a clinician which tests suit them.
- Consider testing before a new sexual relationship and whenever you have a new partner.
- Ask which tests are right for you, since different infections need different tests.
- Use condoms consistently, as they lower the risk of many STIs.
If you notice sores, unusual discharge or pain, see a doctor promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment protect your health and that of your partners.
