Medical tests help doctors understand what is happening in your body, from a quick swab to a blood draw. A little preparation can make the visit smoother and help your results be accurate.

Some tests, such as certain blood sugar and cholesterol tests, may require fasting for several hours beforehand. Not every test does, so follow the instructions from your doctor’s office or lab rather than guessing. If you are asked to fast, water is usually allowed unless you are told otherwise.

  • Ask what the test is for and how to prepare.
  • Bring a list of your medicines and supplements.
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily.
  • Ask when and how you will get your results.

Do not stop taking prescribed medicines before a test unless your doctor tells you to.
