How to Prepare for a Routine Gynecology Check-Up

A little preparation, from tracking your cycle to listing your questions, helps you get more from a routine gynecology visit.

A routine gynecology visit is a chance to ask questions, review your reproductive health and catch concerns early. What happens depends on your age, health history and any symptoms, and it often begins with a conversation before any exam.

  • Note the first day of your last period and any changes in your cycle, bleeding or pain.
  • Write down your questions and symptoms, including any you feel awkward raising.
  • Bring a list of your medicines, supplements and relevant family history.
  • Ask which screening tests are due for you and what each one involves.

You can ask for an explanation at any step and pause an exam if you feel uncomfortable. If you have unusual bleeding, pelvic pain or discharge, do not wait for your next routine visit; talk to a doctor.
