A first physical therapy appointment is mainly about getting to know you. Your therapist will ask about your symptoms, past injuries, medical history and daily activities, and what you hope to do again.

Expect an assessment of how you move, which may include posture, strength, balance and range of motion. Your therapist will then explain what they found and set up a plan with realistic goals. Many people also learn a few starter exercises before leaving.

  • Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely.
  • Bring your medication list and any referral or imaging reports.
  • Say what makes your symptoms better or worse.
  • Ask how long treatment may take.

If pain is severe or sudden, or comes with numbness or weakness, talk to a doctor first.
