Walking is a low-cost, low-impact way to get moving, and building up gradually makes the habit easier to keep.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to become more active. It needs very little equipment, puts little stress on the joints and can be built up gradually. If you are new to exercise, start with about 10 minutes a day and add a few minutes each week.

  • Wear comfortable, supportive shoes.
  • Aim for a pace where you can talk but not sing.
  • Walk at the same time each day so it becomes routine.

The CDC recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, but any movement is a good start. If you have a heart or joint condition, or have been inactive for a long time, check with your doctor first. Stop and seek medical advice if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.
