Most sore throats are caused by common viruses, such as those behind colds, and they usually improve within about a week. Simple comfort measures at home can make the days easier.

  • Drink plenty of fluids, including warm tea or broth.
  • Rest your voice and get extra sleep.
  • Use a clean humidifier so the air does not get too dry.
  • Avoid smoke and other irritants.

See a doctor if your sore throat lasts longer than a week, is severe, or comes with a high fever, a rash or swollen glands in the neck. A doctor can also check for strep throat, which is treated differently from a viral sore throat.

Trouble breathing or swallowing, or unusual drooling, needs urgent medical care.
