How to Choose Shoes That Fit Well and Support Your Feet

Fit, timing and a few simple checks make it easier to find shoes that protect your feet and help prevent blisters, calluses and aches.

Well-fitting shoes help prevent many common foot problems, from blisters and calluses to sore heels. Feet tend to swell as the day goes on, so shop in the afternoon or evening and fit shoes to your larger foot.

  • Leave about a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
  • Choose a roomy toe box so your toes can spread without rubbing.
  • Look for a firm heel and a sole that bends at the ball of the foot, not the middle.
  • Replace shoes with uneven wear or worn-out cushioning.

Shoes should feel comfortable right away, so do not count on them stretching later. If foot pain continues in well-fitting shoes, or you notice numbness, swelling or changes in the shape of your feet, see a doctor or podiatrist.
