When joints ache, resting can seem like the safest choice. Yet the CDC encourages people with arthritis to stay physically active, because regular movement can ease pain and stiffness and help joints work better.
Low-impact activities put less stress on joints. Walking, swimming or water exercise, cycling and gentle stretching are common places to start.
- Begin slowly and build up gradually.
- Warm up with easy movement before stretching or walking briskly.
- Wear supportive shoes and choose flat, even routes.
- Stop and rest if you feel sharp or unusual pain.
Joints that become swollen or hot, or pain that lingers, should be checked, so talk to your doctor or a physical therapist before starting a new routine.
