How to Set Healthy Boundaries to Reduce Work-Related Stress

Clear limits on work time and notifications can protect your energy and help ease everyday work stress.

Work pressure is a common source of everyday stress, and it can follow you home through phones and email. Clear boundaries do not make you less committed; they protect the energy you need to do good work.

Small changes are often easier to keep than big ones. Try one or two of these:

  • Set a regular finishing time and keep to it most days.
  • Turn off work notifications in the evening.
  • Step away from your screen for a short walk at lunchtime.
  • Ask to reprioritize tasks when your plate is already full.

Talking with a manager, colleague or friend can also lighten the load. If stress leaves you exhausted, sleeping badly or feeling hopeless for weeks, talk to a doctor or mental health professional. If you ever feel unsafe, contact your local emergency number.
