Stress is a normal response to pressure, but when it builds up through the day it can leave you tense, restless and tired. Slow breathing is one of the simplest tools to try, because it costs nothing and can be done almost anywhere.
Many people find that slowing the breath helps them feel calmer. A few minutes is enough to start:
- Sit comfortably and let your shoulders drop.
- Breathe in gently through your nose for about four counts.
- Breathe out slowly for about six counts.
- Repeat for a few minutes, and stop if you feel dizzy.
Breathing exercises are a helpful habit, not a treatment. If stress or anxiety is affecting your sleep, mood or daily life for weeks, talk to a doctor or a qualified mental health professional.
