Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, according to the CDC, and many happen at home. A few practical changes can make everyday spaces safer and help you or a loved one move with more confidence.
- Remove loose rugs and keep cords, clutter and shoes out of walkways.
- Use bright lighting in hallways and on stairs, with a night light on the way to the bathroom.
- Add sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs and grab bars in the shower and near the toilet.
- Wear well-fitting shoes with non-slip soles, even indoors.
If you have fallen, feel unsteady or notice dizziness, talk to a doctor. They can review your balance, vision and medicines and suggest other ways to lower your risk.
