Many people start a weight plan with a big number in mind, then feel discouraged when progress is slower than expected. Realistic goals are easier to keep. The CDC notes that people who lose weight gradually and steadily, about 1 to 2 pounds a week, are more successful at keeping it off.
Try setting goals around habits rather than only the scale:
- Add a vegetable to two meals a day.
- Walk for 20 minutes on most days.
- Notice other progress, such as energy, stamina and how clothes fit.
Weight shifts naturally from day to day, so look at trends over weeks. Weight loss is not right for everyone. If you have a health condition, are pregnant or have a history of disordered eating, talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian first.
