A menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. In adults it commonly lasts about 21 to 35 days, and bleeding often lasts two to seven days, but patterns differ from person to person. Tracking yours in a notebook or app helps you spot what is normal for you.
Talk to a doctor if you notice any of these changes:
- Bleeding that soaks through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours
- Periods that last longer than seven days
- Bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause
- Severe pain that interferes with daily life, or missed periods when you are not pregnant
These changes have many possible causes, so a doctor can help find the reason. Seek urgent care if very heavy bleeding comes with dizziness or fainting.
