Simple Breathing Exercises to Support Your Lung Health

Pursed-lip and belly breathing are two simple techniques to practice while seated, along with when to talk to your doctor.

Breathing exercises can help you feel calmer and more in control of your breath. Two commonly taught techniques are easy to try while sitting comfortably.

  • Pursed-lip breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose for about two counts, then breathe out gently through pursed lips for about four counts.
  • Belly breathing: rest one hand on your chest and one on your stomach, breathe in through your nose so your stomach rises, then let it fall as you breathe out.
  • Practice for a few minutes at a time, and stop if you feel dizzy.

These exercises do not treat lung disease and do not replace prescribed care. If you have a lung condition such as asthma or COPD, ask your doctor which techniques suit you. Talk to a doctor about new or worsening shortness of breath, and call 911 for severe trouble breathing.
