Safe Sleep for Babies: Simple Steps Every Parent Can Follow

A safe sleep space and a few simple habits can help protect your baby at every nap and every night.

Creating a safe sleep space is one of the most useful things parents can do for a new baby. Pediatric experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend a few simple steps for every nap and every night.

  • Place your baby on their back to sleep.
  • Use a firm, flat sleep surface, such as a crib or bassinet that meets current safety standards.
  • Keep the sleep space bare, with no pillows, blankets, bumpers or soft toys.
  • Share your room, but not your bed, ideally for at least the first six months.

Sleep guidance can differ for babies who were born early or have a medical condition, so ask your pediatrician for advice that fits your child. Seek urgent medical help if your baby is hard to wake, has trouble breathing or seems unwell.
