Daily Habits That Support a Healthy Bladder and Urinary Tract

Simple everyday habits, from steady hydration to not holding urine, can help keep your bladder and urinary tract comfortable.

Your urinary system filters waste and balances fluids all day, and a few steady habits can help it work comfortably.

Hydration is the best place to start. Spreading fluids across the day is easier on most people than drinking a lot at once, and pale yellow urine usually suggests you are getting enough. Fluid needs vary, so follow your doctor’s advice if you have been given a limit.

  • Do not hold urine for long stretches when you can go.
  • Notice whether caffeine or alcohol seems to irritate your bladder.
  • Wipe front to back and keep the genital area clean and dry.

Talk to a doctor if you have burning when you urinate, blood in your urine, a sudden change in how often you go, or pain in your side or lower abdomen.
