Heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest that happens when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. Occasional heartburn is common, and a few daily habits may ease it for some people.
- Eat smaller meals and avoid lying down for a few hours afterward.
- Notice foods that seem to trigger symptoms, such as fried or fatty meals, chocolate, coffee, spicy dishes or alcohol.
- Raise the head of your bed if symptoms strike at night.
- Avoid smoking, which can make reflux worse.
See a doctor if heartburn happens often, does not improve with lifestyle changes, or comes with trouble swallowing, vomiting, black stools or unexplained weight loss. Chest pain can also signal a heart problem. If you have chest pain with shortness of breath, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, call 911.
