Men’s Mental Health: How to Start Talking About How You Feel

Feeling low or on edge is common, and a simple conversation with someone you trust is a good first step.

Feeling low, irritable or constantly on edge is not a sign of weakness, and it is more common than many people admit. Some men were taught to push through and stay quiet, which can make it harder to reach out when things feel heavy.

Starting the conversation can be simple:

  • Tell a friend, partner or relative you trust how you have been feeling.
  • Keep up regular sleep, activity and time with other people.
  • Cut back on alcohol, which can make low moods worse.
  • Book an appointment with your doctor to talk it through.

Talk to a doctor or mental health professional if low mood, anxiety or loss of interest lasts more than a couple of weeks or affects work and relationships. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line right away.
