Mindful Eating and Portion Awareness for a Healthy Weight

Slowing down, serving modest portions and noticing fullness cues can help you manage how much you eat without strict rules.

Managing weight is not only about what you eat. How you eat matters too. Eating while distracted, rushing through meals or serving very large portions can make it easy to eat more than your body needs without noticing.

Mindful eating means paying attention to your food and to your body’s hunger and fullness signals. A few simple steps can help:

  • Sit down at a table and turn off the TV or phone.
  • Eat slowly and put your fork down between bites.
  • Serve a modest portion and pause before taking seconds.
  • Stop when you feel comfortably full.

These habits work best alongside regular meals, enough sleep and physical activity. If you often eat when you are not hungry, feel out of control around food or feel distressed about your eating, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
