Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. Some pass on their own, while others block the flow of urine and cause intense pain.
The classic sign is sudden, severe pain in the side or back that may move toward the lower abdomen. Other signs include pain when urinating, pink or red urine, nausea and a frequent urge to go. Fever or chills with these symptoms needs urgent medical care.
- Drink fluids steadily through the day, since water helps dilute urine.
- Be mindful of salt, as a high-sodium diet can raise the risk of some stones.
- If you have had a stone, ask your doctor about a prevention plan.
Talk to a doctor about any of these symptoms, because only a medical exam can tell what is causing them.
